Shoulder Stiffness Treatment

This may sound simple, but the treatment for shoulder stiffness is simply to get your shoulder moving!

Usually the treatment begins with an exercise program to stimulate shoulder movement. Often, the use of a pulley or cane is recommended. This enables you to use your "good" shoulder to move your stiff one.

Physical therapy may be prescribed. The therapist will try to stretch the shoulder past the areas of stiffness. A home exercise program is almost always prescribed with physical therapy; just the 2-3 visits a week with therapy alone are not enough to overcome most significant shoulder stiffness. We often recommend exercises 5-7 days a week for significant frozen shoulder treatment, which, almost by definition, requires the patient to do home exercises. Our Deluxe Shoulder Therapy Set is specifically designed for this purpose.

Pain control is an important part of this program. This can include over-the-counter medications and/or prescription medication. In addition, cold therapy is also an important treatment in reducing the pain after a long series of stretching exercises.

Your orthopedic surgeon may recommend surgery if the stiffness is severe and does not respond to the above measures. Surgery can include a "manipulation under anesthesia" or arthroscopic surgery to help break up the adhesions. Intensive exercise (to maintain gains achieved in surgery) and cryotherapy (to control pain) are useful after surgery.
