Frequently asked questions about the DonJoy Lateral J Knee brace include

  1. How does it work? The natural tendency of the patella (knee-cap) is to tend go out to the side of the knee. This is due to the alignment of the average person's bones, as well as muscle forces and ligaments. In some people, this force that pushes the kneecap out to the side can become excessive and cause pain on the outside of the kneecap or underneath the kneecap (see chondromalacia). In other people, trauma can cause loosening of the ligaments and cause the kneecap to partially or completely dislocate (see patellar instability). This can also happen without any serious trauma. The "J brace" protects against these problems by providing a tubular buttress that acts as a "speed bump" to prevent the patella from jumping laterally, as well as providing a constant gentle force to keep it in socket properly.
  2. Are there any hinges or metals stays on this knee brace? No. The DonJoy Later J knee brace is purely a patella or kneecap stabilizing brace, and as such, does not have any metal stays. If you'd like a knee brace that does, please see our DonJoy Drytex Hinged Knee Brace, or DonJoy Playmaker.
  3. Is there a different brace for right and left knees? Yes. The position of the "J" buttress is different, depending on whether the brace is designed to fit a right or left knee. Please be sure to specify left or right knee when ordering.
  4. What color is the DonJoy Lateral J knee brace? The DonJoy Lateral J knee brace only comes in black, because it is made of Drytex. You may have seen pictures of this knee brace in blue, but that is the color of the neoprene knee brace; we do not carry it, because we have found Drytex to be far superior.

All measurements taken six (6) inches (15 centimeters) above the middle of the kneecap. See our knee brace measuring guide for more information.

For the DonJoy Lateral J Knee Brace, we recommend the following sizes:

  • Small: 14 to 16 inches (35.5 to 40.5 centimeters)
  • Medium: 16 to 19 inches (40.5 to 48 centimeters)
  • Large: 19 to 21.5 inches (48 to 54.5 centimeters)
  • X-Large: 21.5 to 24.5 inches (54.5 to 62 centimeters)
  • XX-Large: 24.5 to 28 inches (62 to 71 centimeters)

As a general rule, most men will wear Large or X-Large knee braces, and most women will wear Medium or Large knee braces. Of course, it depends on the size of your thighs! (Don't worry, we keep that information confidential.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: We have modified the above sizing chart from DonJoy's recommended sizes because we have noted, over thousands of knee braces sold, that the DonJoy sizes fit too tightly for most of our customers' preference. If you would prefer to use DonJoy's actual sizing guidelines, please use this chart for your knee brace purchase.
