Herniated Disc: Treatment
Severe herniated disks, especially ones that have associated weakness in the legs, or bowel/bladder symptoms are usually treated with surgery. This surgery is directed at removing the portion of the disc that is pressing on the nerve.
However, many people have mild herniated disks that primarily cause low back pain.
These types of disk herniations, or bulges, can often be treated without surgery. As a matter of fact, numerous scientific studies have shown that the treatment of these types of disc problems can result in the same long term outcome, measured 2 years after the initial injury.
The non-operative treatment of disc herniations is directed at strengthening your muscles around the back and abdomen, while providing your back support for more strenuous activity. Please see our Low Back Pain Relief page for more information on what you can do to help your aching back.
